Device Priority Strategy
Launch on the right devices first — not all devices at once.
Default MVP Device Sequence
For most OTT launches, this sequence minimises risk and maximises iteration speed:
1. Web first
- Fastest deployment cycle (no app store approval)
- Easiest to hotfix post-launch
- Generates real user behaviour data before you commit Smart TV builds
- Handles most desktop and living-room browser traffic (Chrome / Safari on TV browsers)
2. iOS + Android (mobile)
- Reaches your core audience on their primary devices
- App store review typically 1–3 days (iOS) / hours to 2 days (Android)
- Enables in-app subscription billing via App Store / Google Play
- Submit in parallel with web launch; time gap is usually < 1 week
3. Smart TV / CTV in waves
- Submit first wave alongside web/mobile launch to minimise total timeline
- Budget for 2–8 weeks per platform (certification, device-specific fixes, resubmissions)
- Prioritise the platforms your target audience actually uses
How to Pick Your Smart TV Priority Order
Factor 1 — Audience device mix
Check your web analytics for TV browser user agents. High Samsung traffic → Tizen first. High LG → webOS. High Fire TV browser → Fire TV app.
Factor 2 — Marketing channels
If you are running connected TV advertising, launch your CTV apps (Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV) before your campaign goes live. Nothing worse than running ads to an audience that cannot install your app.
Factor 3 — Operational capacity for QA
Each Smart TV platform requires dedicated device testing. Do not submit to platforms you cannot QA properly — a rejected app wastes 2–4 weeks.
Recommended Staging (example)
| Wave | Devices | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Web | Live on launch day |
| Day 0–3 | iOS, Android | Submit in parallel with web |
| Week 4–8 | Tizen, webOS | First Smart TV wave |
| Week 8–12 | Roku, Fire TV | CTV wave |
| Week 12+ | Android TV, Apple TV | Complete the matrix |
Common mistake: Teams try to launch all platforms simultaneously, discover device-specific bugs in the final week, and delay the entire launch. Stagger deliberately — web first always.
